Summary

The classic boyhood adventure tale, updated with a new introduction by noted Mark Twain scholar R。 Kent Rasmussen

A consummate prankster with a quick wit, Tom Sawyer dreams of a bigger fate than simply being a “rich boy。” Yet through the novel’s humorous escapades—from the famous episode of the whitewashed fence to the trial of Injun Joe—Mark Twain explores the deeper themes of the adult world, one of dishonesty and superstition, murder and revenge, starvation and slavery。

Much better than I remembered it to be, and better than any filmed version of the same story。 Especially poignant at the end was Huck realising he wasn't made for civilization。 Tasty read, not just for kids。 Much better than I remembered it to be, and better than any filmed version of the same story。 Especially poignant at the end was Huck realising he wasn't made for civilization。 Tasty read, not just for kids。 。。。more

Underneath it all, is a morality tale, I like how it wraps up and how these characters grow in such a short book。 。。。more

I am 38 and just now reading this book。 We never were asked to read it in Middle School, High School or College。 Maybe it was better that I read it now that I am older, knowing now that Twain wrote it for an older audience reflecting on their youth。 It is a great book and I look forward to reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn。

This was so funny! A perfect book to listen to while painting a fence! Now I’ll listen to Huck Finn while I *continue* painting the fence… because the fence is very big。 😳

really enjoyed revisiting Clemen's (most) classic work。 I probably read it myself in my pre-teens but when I found that Nick Offerman wanted to read it out loud to me, I jumped on the chance。 Offerman is very much the right reader/narrator/voice for Tom and Twain at the same time!I forgot how much I loved the quaint colloquialisms of the era/culture and the myriad bits of hyperbole and superstition that a young man might hold (en-caricature?) in that setting。 really enjoyed revisiting Clemen's (most) classic work。 I probably read it myself in my pre-teens but when I found that Nick Offerman wanted to read it out loud to me, I jumped on the chance。 Offerman is very much the right reader/narrator/voice for Tom and Twain at the same time!I forgot how much I loved the quaint colloquialisms of the era/culture and the myriad bits of hyperbole and superstition that a young man might hold (en-caricature?) in that setting。 。。。more

That is brilliant ! I find Mark Twain genius! How through the small and simple things he opens for us profound world of understanding the deepness of human being soul。 I like his wisdom。 Especially I like his quote: "The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why。"。 I study from this author a lot and I put him in my new book as a character。 and never enough reading ! Picked it up thinking it would be a light read only for it to keep me on the edge of my seat。 It was witty, thrilling, and beautifully written。

Haha, what a mischievous kid that can manage to wiggle his way out of any situation of consequence。 Ah, childhood。

“The Adventure of Tom Sawyer” by Mark Twain as the name suggests is the story about Tom Sawyer and the various adventures he had along the way。。The story had some exciting events (which I won’t spoil for you) that kept me hooked into the story。The part that I liked the most was the scene in the graveyard when the doctor was killed by Injun Joe。 The scene was interesting to read and I was anxious about what is about to happen next。 。I read “The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn” before Tom Sawyer。 I “The Adventure of Tom Sawyer” by Mark Twain as the name suggests is the story about Tom Sawyer and the various adventures he had along the way。。The story had some exciting events (which I won’t spoil for you) that kept me hooked into the story。The part that I liked the most was the scene in the graveyard when the doctor was killed by Injun Joe。 The scene was interesting to read and I was anxious about what is about to happen next。 。I read “The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn” before Tom Sawyer。 I thought it won’t make a difference but after reading this book I would suggest reading Tom Sawyer before as it kind of gives an insight into Huckleberry’s character and continues the story further。。I will definitely recommend reading this book as it is about childhood adventures so maybe when you read it you can remember your childhood and your own adventures。 ^^ 。。。more

This was one of those books I felt that I had to read at some point in my life and I am glad I did。 Such a fun little story about the mischief of a couple of ill-mannered boys with good hearts。

Read it as a kid in school, figured it was worth a revisit。 It was alright, decent story and the audiobook with Nick Offerman was okay。 But at the end of the day it was a kids book and a bit boring for me a lot of the time。

Read in highschool for class。 A classic。 Not my favorite but not horrible。

I re-read this for my bookclub—it’s fascinating to read a classic several decades later。 Tom Sawyer offers an interesting glimpse into life for a middle-class white boy in the mid-1800s。 I had more tolerance for Tom Sawyer’s antics this time around, seeing him more as an inquisitive 10 year old, impulsive to a fault。 Great criticism here of human nature and the hypocrisy of the institution of religion, which I expect from Twain。 This story is more lighthearted than Huck Finn, so not as enjoyable I re-read this for my bookclub—it’s fascinating to read a classic several decades later。 Tom Sawyer offers an interesting glimpse into life for a middle-class white boy in the mid-1800s。 I had more tolerance for Tom Sawyer’s antics this time around, seeing him more as an inquisitive 10 year old, impulsive to a fault。 Great criticism here of human nature and the hypocrisy of the institution of religion, which I expect from Twain。 This story is more lighthearted than Huck Finn, so not as enjoyable to me。 While Twain is an excellent writer, sometimes he provides too much detail, slowing down the plot, which was the writing style then but still annoying! 。。。more

I have read and re-read "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" since I was about Tom's age, and will continue to do so until I am old and gray and can't remember my own name。 Tom is a delightful little brat and conman in the making, a boy for a boy's time, and one of my favorite literary characters。 I can say the same thing about Huck Finn。 I read this book not to judge it, but to enjoy it and revel in the delights of a small boy's childhood in a very specific time at a very specific place。 This is, and I have read and re-read "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" since I was about Tom's age, and will continue to do so until I am old and gray and can't remember my own name。 Tom is a delightful little brat and conman in the making, a boy for a boy's time, and one of my favorite literary characters。 I can say the same thing about Huck Finn。 I read this book not to judge it, but to enjoy it and revel in the delights of a small boy's childhood in a very specific time at a very specific place。 This is, and always will be, one of my favorite books。 。。。more

While this book did not fully catch my attention, there were certain aspects of the story that I loved。 The interactions between Tom, his peers, and his family added engaging details to the story。 The ongoing murder mystery, and the secrets and loyalty between Huck and Tom, gave the story a suspenseful aspect。 In addition, these two quotes best sum up what I found to be the most intriguing parts of this classic novel。。。"Tom said to himself that it was not such a hollow word, after all。 He has di While this book did not fully catch my attention, there were certain aspects of the story that I loved。 The interactions between Tom, his peers, and his family added engaging details to the story。 The ongoing murder mystery, and the secrets and loyalty between Huck and Tom, gave the story a suspenseful aspect。 In addition, these two quotes best sum up what I found to be the most intriguing parts of this classic novel。。。"Tom said to himself that it was not such a hollow word, after all。 He has discovered a great law of human action, without knowing it - namely, that in order to make a man or a boy covet a thing, it is only necessary to make the thing difficult to attain。" (pg。 13)"He could drink and swear now, but found to his surprise that he did not want to。 The simple fact that he could, took the desire away, and the charm of it。" (pg。 143) 。。。more

Tom Sawyer is a book that I was sure I had already read, but a few chapters in realized I had not。 My boys are going to a new school next year and this was on the oldest's reading list, so I wanted to read it as well。 It is genuinely funny, even though its been almost 150 years since it was published。 Great read, if you have not read it I recommend listening to the version on Audible that Nick Offerman reads, he does an awesome job。 Highly recommended by me and my oldest。 Tom Sawyer is a book that I was sure I had already read, but a few chapters in realized I had not。 My boys are going to a new school next year and this was on the oldest's reading list, so I wanted to read it as well。 It is genuinely funny, even though its been almost 150 years since it was published。 Great read, if you have not read it I recommend listening to the version on Audible that Nick Offerman reads, he does an awesome job。 Highly recommended by me and my oldest。 。。。more
